Victims killed in New Orleans Bourbon Street car-ramming attack identified
Bourbon Street as crowds gathered in New Orleans to celebrate New Year’s Eve and the Sugar Bowl.
Among the victims were a father of two from Baton Rouge, a former football player from Lafayette, a young mother from Metairie, and an 18-year-old nursing student who had come to the city with friends to ring in the new year.
The attacker, identified by the FBI as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, drove a pickup truck from Canal Street onto Bourbon Street at approximately 3:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
According to authorities, the vehicle displayed an ISIS flag, and weapons and a suspected improvised explosive device were discovered inside.
Federal officials are investigating the incident as a potential act of terrorism.
Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux
Eighteen-year-old Nikyra “Cheyenne” Dedeaux of Gulfport, Mississippi, had plans to start a nursing program at Blue Cliff College on January 13. Known affectionately as “Biscuit” among friends, she was described as a “little ball of sunshine” who lifted the spirits of everyone around her.
Cheyenne traveled to New Orleans with her cousin and a friend to celebrate the new year. Tragically, she was struck and killed by the vehicle during the attack.
Her grieving mother, Melissa Dedeaux, recalled her as a loving, selfless individual who had a knack for bringing people together. “She was the sweetest person. She would give you anything,” her mother said.
Reggie Hunter
Reggie Hunter, 37, was a dedicated father of two from Baton Rouge and a respected member of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club. A warehouse manager by trade, Hunter decided to visit Bourbon Street on a whim after finishing work.
He was struck and fatally injured by the vehicle, leaving behind a 12-year-old son excelling in STEM and an 18-month-old toddler.
Family members described Hunter as a positive, energetic person who enjoyed working out and spending time with his family. His cousin, Shirell Jackson, said, “You pray for a prosperous year, and then you get this devastating news.”
Tiger Bech
Twenty-seven-year-old Tiger Bech, a Lafayette native and former football standout, succumbed to catastrophic injuries from the attack.
A graduate of Princeton University, where he played football, Bech had built a career as a trader in New York City. He was in New Orleans for the holidays when he was struck by the vehicle.
Bech, known for his athletic excellence, was kept on life support until his family could arrive. He is survived by his younger brother, Jack Bech, a former LSU football player, and numerous grieving loved ones.
Nicole Perez
Nicole Perez, 28, had just been promoted to manager at Kimmy’s Deli in Metairie and was planning a fresh start with her four-year-old son.
Known for her dedication and work ethic, Perez walked to work every morning to provide a better future for her child.
Her boss, Kimberly Usher, praised her resilience and commitment, saying, “She was a good mom and wanted to be successful.” Perez’s son is now in the care of close friends and family.
Hubert Gauthreaux, 21
The fifth victim identified in the attack is 21-year-old Hubert Gauthreaux, whose family had initially reported him missing. Family members later confirmed his death on social media after hours of searching. Hubert was found at a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
“Our hearts are shattered,” a relative wrote online, reflecting the deep grief felt by his loved ones.
Matthew Tenedorio, 25
The sixth victim has been identified as 25-year-old Matthew Tenedorio, an audiovisual technician who worked at the iconic Superdome. Matthew was tragically shot and killed during the incident.

Drew Dauphin, a native of Montgomery, Alabama, was one of at least 14 people killed in the attack early Wednesday morning. A 2016 graduate of Alabama Christian Academy (ACA), Dauphin was remembered fondly by his former school community.
“The ACA family mourns with the Dauphin family in the loss of their son, Drew, a beloved part of the ACA community and a graduate of 2016,” said ACA Head of School Josh Roberts. “Drew is remembered as a friend, leader, and key part of ACA’s baseball and football programs. Our hearts are heavy as we share in the grief of this loss with the Dauphin family and Drew’s many friends and classmates.”
Dauphin went on to attend Auburn University, where he graduated in 2023.
Auburn University President Christopher B. One Dead, Two Injured in Late-Night Shooting in Gary
GARY, IN – Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Tuesday night, leaving one man dead and two individuals injured.
According to the Gary Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Delaware Street at approximately 10:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a possible gunshot victim.
Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple victims inside the residence.
A 22-year-old woman from East Chicago was found suffering from a gunshot wound.
She was provided immediate medical assistance at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Inside the home, officers located a 26-year-old male victim from Gary in the kitchen.
He was unresponsive and had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Emergency responders pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Additionally, a 31-year-old man from Chicago was found to have sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Authorities confirmed that he was transported to Methodist Northlake Hospital by a private party prior to law enforcement’s arrival. His current condition remains undisclosed.
