Spotsylvania County, Va. — An 18-year-old high school senior is dead and a juvenile injured following an early morning shooting during a suspected residential burglary in the River Club subdivision of Spotsylvania County.

At approximately 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress at a residence located in the 2700 block of McKenzie Lane.

The caller, a resident of the home, stated that someone had attempted to break into the house and that shots had been fired.

Deputies responded immediately and discovered three individuals involved in the incident. Michael Bosworth Jr., 18, was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Bosworth was a senior at Massaponax High School, set to graduate later this month.

A second individual, identified as a juvenile, sustained a minor gunshot injury and was treated and released.

A third juvenile, who was also at the scene, was not injured.

Due to their ages, the names of the two juveniles have not been released.

According to preliminary findings, the three individuals were allegedly attempting to gain entry by force through the back door of the residence when they were confronted by the homeowner, who had exited the home to investigate.

During that confrontation, the homeowner fired shots, striking two of the individuals.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Massaponax High School Principal William Lancaster III issued a message to the school community, expressing condolences and offering support. “We are deeply saddened to share the news of Michael’s passing,” Lancaster said. “Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”

Lancaster also informed families that school counselors and division support staff would be available when students return on Monday, and that prom will proceed as scheduled Saturday evening.

Resources to help students and families cope with grief have been made available through the school division’s website.

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. — A late-night party in eastern North Carolina turned deadly early Saturday morning when gunfire erupted, leaving two people dead and 13 others injured, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Burnis Wilkins confirmed that deputies were called to the scene on Dixon Drive, just outside the town of Maxton, at approximately 3:00 a.m. following reports of a shooting at a large outdoor gathering attended by more than 150 people.

When deputies arrived, chaos had already unfolded — witnesses said over 150 individuals fled the area before law enforcement could secure the scene.
