CANTON, Miss. — A Canton man has been charged with murder following a deadly shooting that occurred late Saturday night at the Camden Park Apartments on Parkview Drive, according to Canton Police Chief Otha Brown.

Authorities say 33-year-old James Ross is accused of fatally shooting Troy Waldrep during a verbal altercation that escalated into violence.

Chief Brown confirmed that Waldrep was shot once in the face during the confrontation, which took place late Saturday evening.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, but Waldrep succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported for medical treatment.

Ross was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held without bond in the local detention facility as the investigation continues.

Waldrep’s family has released a photograph of him and is asking the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this profoundly difficult time.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, Scott was taken into custody two days ago following an extensive investigation by detectives assigned to the department’s Bomb and Arson Unit.

He now faces one count of Promoting Civil Disorder and one count of Armed Criminal Action, both felony charges.
