Andrew Canepa Killed After Mass Shooting at Grand Sierra Resort in Reno

RENO, Nev. — Authorities have identified one of the victims killed in Monday’s mass shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort as Andrew Canepa.
Andrew was among the three individuals fatally shot in the incident that occurred around 7:25 a.m. on July 28 in the valet area of the resort.

He was reportedly on his way home to pick up his six-year-old son, Kayden, when his life was tragically cut short.
Andrew Canepa was remembered by loved ones as a devoted and loving father who worked tirelessly to support his son and be present for every milestone, big and small.
His sudden death has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of those closest to him, especially young Kayden, who now faces the unimaginable loss of his father.
In the wake of Andrew’s death, a friend of the family launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support Kayden’s future.
The fundraiser aims to provide resources for counseling and mental health support, educational and extracurricular expenses, and general household stability as the family navigates this devastating chapter.
“Andrew loved Kayden more than anything in the world,” said the family friend who organized the fundraiser. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping us honor Andrew’s memory by surrounding Kayden with love, security, and hope for the future.”
The July 28 shooting resulted in three fatalities and three additional injuries.
Two victims died at the scene, and a third succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital.
Two other victims remain in critical condition, while a sixth was treated and released.
According to the Sparks Police Department, the suspect—an adult male—entered the resort parking lot, approached the valet area, and began firing a handgun at a group of people.
Five individuals were shot in that initial burst of gunfire.
One victim died on scene, while four others were transported to the hospital. Of those, one later died, two remain in critical condition, and one was released after treatment.
The suspect then walked further through the lot and reportedly shot a sixth victim who was driving through the area, fatally wounding them inside their vehicle.
Security personnel and police officers quickly located the suspect within four to five minutes of the first 911 call.
An officer-involved shooting occurred in the parking lot, during which the suspect was wounded and taken into custody. He remains hospitalized, and his identity has not yet been released.
Police say there appears to be no known connection between the suspect and any of the victims. One officer suffered minor injuries—believed to be caused by broken glass—but was not shot.
The Sparks Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, while authorities continue working to determine a motive for the attack.
Officials caution that the investigation will be extensive and may take time to conclude.
The Grand Sierra Resort issued a statement following the incident, expressing sorrow over the violence and gratitude to the security team and law enforcement for their rapid and courageous response:
“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today. Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident. We are incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team, whose immediate actions helped prevent further harm.”
Reno City Councilman Devon Reese also offered condolences to the families affected, emphasizing the city’s collective grief and support.
As investigators continue their work, portions of the resort property may remain temporarily closed.
Law enforcement is asking anyone with information related to the shooting to contact the Reno Police Department at (775) 322-4900.
