Suspect in York County Police Shooting Identified as 24-Year-Old Matthew Ruth, Officials Address Social Media Misinformation
NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Authorities have identified the suspect in Wednesday’s deadly police shooting in York County as 24-year-old Matthew J. Ruth, who died from a gunshot wound after opening fire on officers serving a warrant.
The shooting left three police officers dead and two others critically wounded, marking one of the most tragic incidents for law enforcement in the region’s history.
Law enforcement officials are also addressing a wave of misinformation circulating on social media, where an unrelated individual from Hanover, Pennsylvania, has been falsely identified as the gunman.
The man, who also goes by the name “Matt,” publicly clarified on social media that he is not 24 years old, is alive, and has no connection to the incident, urging the public to stop sharing his photographs.

Officials are reminding the public to rely solely on verified information from law enforcement and credible news outlets to avoid spreading harmful falsehoods.
Court documents reveal troubling details about Ruth’s behavior in the days leading up to the confrontation.
According to an affidavit of probable cause:
On September 16, a woman called police to report a man in camouflage with binoculars on her property, seen peering into her residence.
Trail camera footage captured the man in her driveway.
Responding officers discovered a black 2000 Ford Ranger pickup truck near the property, which the caller believed was connected to the suspect.
The woman and her daughter reported that on August 20, the daughter’s vehicle had been set on fire in the driveway. She told investigators she suspected her ex-boyfriend, Matthew Ruth, but initially declined to pursue an investigation.
The trail camera image showed a man in full camouflage clothing, holding a scoped device aimed toward the residence. The daughter identified the individual as Ruth, whom she had briefly dated.
Investigators also noted in the image that Ruth had an AR-15 style rifle slung across his chest.
Police searched the area but were unable to locate Ruth at that time. Based on the evidence, a warrant was sought for his arrest on charges of stalking, loitering and prowling at night, and criminal trespass.
On September 17, 2025, just after 2:10 p.m., officers from multiple agencies attempted to serve the warrant at 1879 Haar Road, North Codorus Township. Ruth opened fire, striking at least five officers.
Three officers died at the scene, while two others were airlifted in critical condition.
Medevac helicopters transported the wounded to regional trauma centers, including WellSpan York Hospital, which confirmed it was treating multiple patients and implemented heightened security protocols.
The suspect, identified as Ruth, was later shot and killed by police officers.
Authorities continue to investigate the events surrounding the tragedy, including Ruth’s actions in the days prior.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community and the wider York County region.

Venezuelan national Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis shot in the leg by an immigration agent in Minneapolis
On January 14, 2025, federal law enforcement personnel were engaged in a targeted enforcement operation involving Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan national who has been present in the United States since 2022.
The operation escalated into a high-speed pursuit, a physical confrontation, and an ambush by multiple subjects, necessitating the use of a defensive firearm discharge by a federal agent.
At approximately 6:50 PM, federal officers initiated a targeted traffic stop of a vehicle operated by Sosa-Celis.
The subject refused to comply with law enforcement commands and attempted to flee the scene.
During the pursuit, the subject’s vehicle collided with a stationary, parked car.
Following the collision, the subject abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
A federal agent pursued the suspect on foot and successfully intercepted him. As the agent attempted to effect an arrest, the subject became combative, resulting in a violent struggle on the ground.
During this confrontation, two additional male subjects emerged from a nearby residence to intervene.
These individuals reportedly ambushed the agent, utilizing a snow shovel and a broom handle to strike the officer.
The situation escalated when the primary suspect, Sosa-Celis, regained his footing and joined the two additional subjects in the assault.
Reports indicate the suspect struck the agent with a blunt object (identified as either the shovel or broom handle).
Citing an immediate threat to his life while being outnumbered and actively assaulted by three individuals, the agent discharged his service weapon in self-defense.
The discharge struck Sosa-Celis in the lower extremity (leg). Following the shot, all three suspects retreated into a nearby apartment complex and initiated a barricade situation.
Following a brief standoff, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) successfully secured the perimeter and apprehended all three individuals without further injury.
Both the federal agent and Sosa-Celis were transported to a local medical facility for treatment.
Images from the scene showed Sosa-Celis conscious and alert during transport.
All three subjects involved in the assault are currently in the custody of ICE.
Further charges related to the assault on a federal officer and resisting arrest are pending review by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
