SOUTHGATE, MI — Authorities have identified the victim killed in Tuesday’s fatal stabbing inside a Southgate Kroger as 23-year-old Abel Vazquez of Southgate.

The violent incident occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 7, inside the Kroger Marketplace located near Fort Street and Pennsylvania Road.

Police say a fight between two men — reportedly over a woman — escalated into a deadly assault that claimed the life of the 23-year-old.

According to Southgate Police, officers responded to the grocery store shortly after 3 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting a physical altercation in progress. When officers arrived, they found Vazquez suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Emergency responders rendered medical aid at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Investigators determined that the suspect, a 33-year-old Kroger employee, and the victim had arranged to meet at the store.

During their confrontation, the dispute turned violent, and the employee allegedly stabbed Vazquez. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Police emphasized that the victim was not employed by Kroger, and the incident is being treated as isolated, posing no ongoing threat to the public.

Detective Sergeant Michael Murphy of the Southgate Police Department stated that the altercation stemmed from personal issues involving a woman.

“I’m not sure how well they knew each other directly, but it did stem over another female that brought the two together,” Sgt. Murphy said. “They had prior communication leading up to this event. It’s just a tragic situation that could have been avoided — one that will devastate multiple families.”

Witnesses at the scene provided additional context.

Anthony DeGregorio, whose sister works at the store, told Channel2 NOW that the suspect was reportedly a store manager accused of inappropriate conduct toward female employees.

“It was two younger guys — one being an employee and the other the boyfriend of an employee,” DeGregorio said. “The boyfriend came to confront the employee for being weird and harassing his girlfriend. It broke out into a fight that ended with the employee pulling a knife. My sister and other women had reported him for harassment, but nothing was ever done — and now this has happened.”

Authorities are still reviewing store surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as part of their investigation.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned soon.

Kroger officials confirmed that the store will reopen on Thursday, October 9, at 8 a.m., following cleanup and security assessments.

The investigation remains active under the Southgate Police Department in coordination with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

On January 14, 2025, federal law enforcement personnel were engaged in a targeted enforcement operation involving Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan national who has been present in the United States since 2022.

The operation escalated into a high-speed pursuit, a physical confrontation, and an ambush by multiple subjects, necessitating the use of a defensive firearm discharge by a federal agent.

At approximately 6:50 PM, federal officers initiated a targeted traffic stop of a vehicle operated by Sosa-Celis.

The subject refused to comply with law enforcement commands and attempted to flee the scene.

During the pursuit, the subject’s vehicle collided with a stationary, parked car.

Following the collision, the subject abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

A federal agent pursued the suspect on foot and successfully intercepted him. As the agent attempted to effect an arrest, the subject became combative, resulting in a violent struggle on the ground.

During this confrontation, two additional male subjects emerged from a nearby residence to intervene.

These individuals reportedly ambushed the agent, utilizing a snow shovel and a broom handle to strike the officer.

The situation escalated when the primary suspect, Sosa-Celis, regained his footing and joined the two additional subjects in the assault.

Reports indicate the suspect struck the agent with a blunt object (identified as either the shovel or broom handle).

Citing an immediate threat to his life while being outnumbered and actively assaulted by three individuals, the agent discharged his service weapon in self-defense.

The discharge struck Sosa-Celis in the lower extremity (leg). Following the shot, all three suspects retreated into a nearby apartment complex and initiated a barricade situation.

Following a brief standoff, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) successfully secured the perimeter and apprehended all three individuals without further injury.

Both the federal agent and Sosa-Celis were transported to a local medical facility for treatment.

Images from the scene showed Sosa-Celis conscious and alert during transport.

All three subjects involved in the assault are currently in the custody of ICE.

Further charges related to the assault on a federal officer and resisting arrest are pending review by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
