Mass Casualty Incident Declared After School Bus and Tour Bus Involved in Major Crash on I-380 in Coolbaugh Township

COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, PA (MONROE COUNTY) – A serious motor vehicle accident involving a school bus and a tour bus occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Interstate 380 southbound near mile marker 9.3 in Coolbaugh Township, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

According to initial reports, the collision resulted in the school bus overturning.

Three individuals—two adult males and one 13-year-old boy—were ejected from the vehicle and sustained head injuries along with other trauma.

In total, emergency medical services (EMS) initially evaluated up to 30 patients for potential injuries.

Multiple EMS and fire units responded from across Monroe and neighboring Lackawanna County to assist with the mass casualty incident.

Agencies on scene included Pennsylvania State Police, Monroe County Stations 25 and 47, as well as EMS units 11 Medic 1, 1122, 1129, 1103, 1408, 921, Lackawanna 55-9, Medic 16-3, and Mobile 16-2.

Although a medevac helicopter was initially placed on standby, it was later canceled.

All patients were instead transported by ground ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The southbound lanes of I-380 were temporarily shut down to allow emergency crews to respond and safely transport patients from the crash scene.

Pennsylvania State Police are leading the investigation into the cause of the accident.

Volusia County, Fla. — A 16-year-old boy has died after being found unresponsive in the Indian River during a weekend camping and fishing trip, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the teen as Hunter McKelvin of Paisley. Deputies said he was discovered face-down in the water Saturday morning near a small island east of Maynard May Park in Edgewater.

Members of the group located the teen and immediately began CPR before transporting him by boat to Maynard May Park.

Upon arrival, officers with the Edgewater Police Department and other emergency responders took over life-saving efforts.

McKelvin was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased later that morning.

Investigators reported that no visible injuries were observed, and there were no immediate signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances during the initial investigation.

An autopsy has been scheduled as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
