16-year-old Gabriel Seats killed in Southwest Atlanta shooting
ATLANTA, Ga. — A violent confrontation between two teenagers ended in tragedy Wednesday evening in southwest Atlanta, leaving one dead and another injured, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 1191 Oakland Drive SW around 8:10 p.m.
Upon arrival, they found two 16-year-old boys suffering from gunshot wounds.
One of the teens, identified Thursday by the Fulton County Medical Examiner as Gabriel Seats, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say preliminary findings suggest that Seats shot the other 16-year-old, who then returned fire, fatally wounding Seats in what appears to have been a mutual exchange of gunfire.
“The assailant shot the surviving 16-year-old, who returned fire, striking and killing him,” said Lt. Andrew Smith, commander of the Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide Unit.
The surviving teen was described as alert, conscious, and breathing when first responders arrived.
His identity has not been released, and authorities have not confirmed whether he will face any criminal charges.
Investigators are currently exploring potential motives behind the altercation, including the possibility of gang involvement.
“At this point, we’re not sure if this is gang related. We do have gang investigators on scene,” Lt. Smith added.
The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone with information to contact the Atlanta Police Department.
