Thomas Jeffries Fatally Shot in Graham Family Dispute, Suspect James Daye in Custody

GRAHAM, N.C. — A fatal shooting in Graham on Wednesday night has left one man dead and another in custody, according to the Graham Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to 400 Poplar Street following reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located 34-year-old Thomas Jeffries Jr., who was suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite emergency efforts, Jeffries later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators quickly identified 59-year-old James Thomas Daye as the suspect.
Daye was taken into custody at the scene without further incident and has since been charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Police described the shooting as the result of a family dispute and emphasized that evidence indicates this was an isolated incident, noting there is no ongoing threat to the wider community.

Woman Fatally Struck by Semi-Truck on Birmingham Interstate Exit Ramp Identified as Shontea Baker

Authorities have identified the woman who was killed earlier this week after being struck by a semi-truck on an interstate exit ramp in Birmingham.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Friday that the victim was Shontea Renee Baker, 40, a Birmingham resident.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 10:26 a.m. Wednesday on the Arkadelphia Road exit ramp from Interstate 59/20.
Emergency responders pronounced Baker deceased at the scene at 10:42 a.m.
At this time, no further details regarding the circumstances of the crash have been released.
The Birmingham Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident.
