17-year-old Julio Matamoros killed in Marion shooting, suspect Cordel Bice in custody

MARION, IN – A 17-year-old student at Mississinewa High School has died from his injuries after being shot Monday in what authorities are describing as a robbery-related incident.
The Mississinewa Community School Corporation confirmed the tragic death of Julio Matamoros, a senior and member of the high school’s baseball team, in a statement shared on Tuesday.
According to the Marion Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of South Western Avenue on Monday following reports of a shooting.
Upon arrival, they found Matamoros lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.
He was transported for emergency medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Before being taken to the hospital, Matamoros reportedly identified the shooter to police as an individual named Cordel.
Investigators later identified the suspect as 18-year-old Cordel Bice.
Bice was also linked to a vehicle seen fleeing the scene shortly after the shooting.
Authorities believe the incident stemmed from an attempted purchase of vape cartridges.
According to police, Bice was allegedly trying to buy the cartridges from Matamoros when the encounter escalated to violence.
Bice was taken into custody and preliminarily charged with attempted murder and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
He was booked into the Grant County Jail, though online records currently do not list him as being in custody.
As of now, no formal charges have been filed, according to court records.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The Marion Police Department is asking anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
The loss of Julio Matamoros has deeply impacted the Mississinewa community, and support services have been made available to students and staff during this difficult time.

Omaha Police Respond to False Active Shooter Report at UNO Criss Library

OMAHA, Neb. — At approximately 5:00 p.m., officers with the Omaha Police Department (OPD) and personnel from the Omaha Fire Department (OFD) responded to reports of an active shooter and multiple victims at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) Criss Library, located at 6401 University Drive.
The initial 911 call reported a mass casualty incident involving an active shooter with several individuals down inside the library.
In response, multiple law enforcement and emergency medical units were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers conducted a comprehensive search of the building and surrounding area.
No victims, evidence of gunfire, or active threat were located.
After clearing the scene, authorities determined that the report was false and appears to have been a swatting call — a deliberate act of making a false emergency report to prompt a large police response.
The Omaha Police Department has confirmed that there was no danger to the public or the university community at any time.
The incident remains under investigation to identify the source of the false report.
Swatting is a serious criminal offense, and those found responsible can face federal and state charges.
