A tragic incident unfolded in Paris on Tuesday evening when a two-year-old girl suffered a fatal gunshot wound in what authorities believe was an accidental shooting.

Paris Police Chief Richard W. Salter Jr. reported that around 6 p.m., the police department received an emergency call from an apartment located in the 300 block of Stone Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers entered the residence and found the young child unresponsive with a gunshot wound to her head.

A 16-year-old boy was also present in the apartment at the time of the incident.

Paris Emergency Medical Services quickly transported the toddler to Paris Regional Health, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to Chief Salter, preliminary findings suggest that the child accidentally discharged a family member’s firearm, resulting in the fatal injury.
