Authorities in northeastern British Columbia are responding to a confirmed active shooter incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, prompting an urgent public safety alert and a large-scale law enforcement deployment across the region.
As of 1:20 p.m., the Tumbler Ridge RCMP confirmed officers are actively on scene and have directed all residents in the community to immediately shelter in place. Individuals are being instructed to lock their doors, remain inside their homes or businesses, and avoid all unnecessary movement until further notice. Anyone outside the immediate area is urged to stay clear and strictly follow police directions and roadway restrictions.
The emergency response follows a Police-Initiated Public Alert issued earlier in the day through Canadaโs Emergency Alert System after reports of an active shooter. The alert applies to Tumbler Ridge and surrounding within the RCMP-designated radius.
Authorities initially described the suspect as a female with brown hair wearing a dress, though officials emphasized that the description was preliminary and subject to change as the investigation develops.
Police now believe the original suspect has been located deceased. However, investigators are continuing their work to determine whether a second suspect may have been involved and to establish the total number of victims connected to the incident.
At this time, officials have not confirmed how many individuals may have been injured or whether anyone requires medical assistance.
Law enforcement continues to stress that the situation should be treated as dangerous and evolving. Residents are advised to:
- Shelter in place immediately
- Lock all doors and secure their properties
- Refrain from leaving homes or workplaces
- Avoid traveling into the affected area
- Not attend school or public locations unless specifically directed
- Never approach a suspect
- Report suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1
Additional police resources are being deployed from neighboring detachments to support the operation, including the North District Emergency Response Team. Officers are working to secure the scene, assess potential threats, and gather critical information.
Authorities have confirmed that public alert notifications and mapping associated with the warning have been verified. No suspect imagery has been released.
Officials caution that details remain limited as the response is still unfolding. The priority remains public safety while investigators determine the full scope of the incident, including whether others were involved.
This remains an active public safety situation. Residents of Tumbler Ridge should continue to remain locked down and vigilant, while those outside the community are advised to avoid the area until law enforcement declares it safe. Further updates will be provided as confirmed information becomes available.
