Rockdale County firefighter Juan Antonia Smith died after a fire truck overturned in a crash at Sigman Road and Eastview Road
CONYERS, Ga. — A Rockdale County firefighter was killed Friday evening after a fire truck overturned while responding to an emergency call in Conyers, according to officials and investigators.
Georgia authorities identified the fallen firefighter as Juan Antonio Smith, a member of Rockdale County Fire Rescue, who died in the line of duty following the tragic crash on June 12, 2026.
According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), troopers were called to investigate an overturned fire truck crash at approximately 5:00 p.m. near the intersection of Eastview Road and Sigman Road in Conyers.
Preliminary findings indicate that the Rockdale County Fire Rescue crew was responding to a reported structure fire in the area when the crash occurred.
Investigators said the fire truck was attempting to make a left turn when the vehicle overturned onto its passenger side. During the rollover, a firefighter riding in the rear portion of the apparatus was ejected from the vehicle.
The firefighter, later identified as Juan Antonio Smith, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released details regarding the condition of any other firefighters who may have been aboard the apparatus at the time of the crash.
Following confirmation of Smith’s death, Brian Kemp released a statement expressing condolences to the firefighter’s family and the Rockdale County community.
“Marty, the girls, and I are saddened tonight by the loss of Firefighter Juan Antonio Smith. As we pray for his loved ones and the entire Rockdale County community, we ask that Georgians keep them in their thoughts as they mourn this sudden and tragic loss.”
The governor’s statement reflected the grief being felt across Georgia as first responders and residents mourn the loss of a firefighter who died while serving his community.
In an earlier statement, Rockdale County Fire Rescue confirmed that a rollover accident involving one of its fire apparatus occurred at the intersection of Sigman Road and Eastview Road.
County officials described the incident as heartbreaking and extended condolences to Smith’s family, friends, fellow firefighters, and the entire public safety community.
“Rockdale County is heartbroken,” officials said, noting that the firefighter’s death represents a tremendous loss for the department and the community it serves.
The crash remains under active investigation by the Georgia State Patrol. Officials said members of the agency’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT East) were deployed to assist with determining exactly how the rollover occurred.

Train Derails in Ferguson Involving Vehicles, Hazmat Team Called Over Ethyl Alcohol Rail Car
FERGUSON, Mo. — A train derailment involving vehicles prompted an emergency response in Ferguson on Ferguson Avenue, where authorities requested a hazardous materials team after determining that one of the train cars contained ethyl alcohol.
Emergency units were dispatched to 617 Ferguson Avenue after reports of the rail incident. Responders found a train that had derailed with vehicles involved.
Officials confirmed there was no reported entrapment. Crews were checking the scene for injuries and evaluating those involved in the incident.
A Hazmat response was requested because one rail car involved in the derailment was carrying ethyl alcohol. Emergency crews were assessing the rail car for any potential leak or hazardous condition and working to secure the area.
