PHOENIX, AZ — Authorities are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred at Maryvale High School in west Phoenix on Monday, August 19, leaving one student dead and another injured following a violent altercation inside a classroom.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the incident involved two freshmen students who became engaged in a fight that quickly escalated.

During the confrontation, one of the students, later identified as Michael Montoya, sustained multiple stab wounds.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The suspected assailant, identified as Chris Aguilar, was immediately detained by a Phoenix police officer assigned to the school as a safety officer.

Officials said the officer responded after being alerted by staff members to an assault taking place in a classroom.

The second student suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated following the incident.

The stabbing prompted an evacuation of the school while police secured the scene and began their investigation.

Detectives are now working to determine what led to the deadly confrontation and have asked anyone with cell phone recordings or information related to the altercation to come forward.

At this time, Phoenix police have not released further details regarding potential charges as the investigation remains active.

Woman Fatally Struck by Semi-Truck on Birmingham Arkadelphia Road exit ramp from Interstate 5920 Identified as Shontea Baker

Authorities have identified the woman who was killed earlier this week after being struck by a semi-truck on an interstate exit ramp in Birmingham.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Friday that the victim was Shontea Renee Baker, 40, a Birmingham resident.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 10:26 a.m. Wednesday on the Arkadelphia Road exit ramp from Interstate 59/20.

Emergency responders pronounced Baker deceased at the scene at 10:42 a.m.

At this time, no further details regarding the circumstances of the crash have been released.
