Alton Blackwell, 37, Found Dead in Buena Vista Township Home; Estranged Wife Charged With Open Murder

A heartbreaking and deeply complicated tragedy in Buena Vista Township, Michigan, has left two families grieving and the community searching for answers. Authorities are investigating the death of 37-year-old Alton Blackwell, who was found inside his home with at least one gunshot wound to the head. His estranged wife, 53-year-old Dawnette Posthumus, has been taken into custody after reportedly telling police that she killed him.

According to the information provided, Blackwell was discovered at his residence at 206 S. 25th Street in Buena Vista Township. Shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Monday, November 2, Posthumus reportedly walked into police headquarters and told officers she had killed her husband. She was later booked into the Saginaw County Jail on an open murder charge.

The case has drawn attention not only because of the circumstances surrounding Blackwell’s death, but also because of the couple’s troubled history and previous domestic violence allegations documented in court records.

Court records indicate that Blackwell and Posthumus purchased their home approximately 10 months before marrying on August 16, 2024. Their relationship later became the subject of multiple domestic violence cases.

In January 2025, prosecutors alleged that Blackwell grabbed Posthumus by the neck, choked her, and punched her in the face inside their home. According to the account presented in the case, she managed to leave and drove to her adult daughter’s residence, where her daughter photographed her injuries.

Blackwell was charged with third-offense domestic violence, a felony. However, the case was dismissed the following month after prosecutors said the alleged victim declined to participate in the proceedings.

Another serious set of allegations emerged in June 2025. Prosecutors accused Blackwell of biting Posthumus on the face, choking her, striking her head against a kitchen counter, punching her stomach, and kicking her after she fell.

Prosecutors also alleged that he slept on top of her to prevent her from leaving. According to the account in the case, Posthumus eventually escaped after he fell asleep and sought medical treatment at a hospital.

A bond recommendation reportedly included a stark warning from prosecutors: “It is believed that he is going to end up killing this Victim.” The filing also referenced four previous domestic violence convictions in Kent County dating back to 2013.

That case was dismissed the following month after Detective Russ Pahssen reportedly said Posthumus had declined to testify.

These allegations and court records provide important background to the investigation, but they do not establish what happened immediately before Blackwell’s death. Authorities will need to determine the circumstances through the ongoing investigation and legal process.

The couple’s relationship continued to deteriorate. Posthumus filed for divorce in Kent County in September 2026. The following month, she reportedly sought a personal protection order, but the request was denied.

Investigators believe Posthumus had been living with her daughter in Grand Rapids for much of the previous year.

Authorities are also examining the movements of both individuals in the days before Blackwell was found. Investigators reportedly believe Posthumus traveled from Grand Rapids to Saginaw County on Saturday, October 31, possibly accompanied by Blackwell. She is believed to have driven his vehicle back to Grand Rapids on Sunday afternoon.

According to the information provided, Posthumus later told relatives that she had killed her husband. Her family reportedly urged her to surrender to authorities.

On Monday, November 2, Posthumus reportedly returned to police headquarters and surrendered. After officers advised her of her rights, she requested an attorney and provided no additional details.

Police recovered a pistol inside the residence. Investigators reportedly believe the firearm belonged to Blackwell, although it was not registered. The information provided also indicates that his criminal history may have prohibited him from legally possessing a firearm. Authorities will need to establish the relevant details as the investigation proceeds.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, to determine the exact cause, manner, and estimated time of Blackwell’s death. Investigators reportedly believe he may have died sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not publicly established all the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The death of Alton Blackwell has left one family mourning a loved one, while Posthumus and her family now face the consequences of a serious criminal case. The history of domestic violence allegations adds another painful dimension to an already devastating situation.

Domestic violence can involve complicated and dangerous circumstances, and allegations of abuse should be taken seriously. At the same time, the circumstances of Blackwell’s death must be established through evidence and the judicial process.

Posthumus’s open murder charge is an accusation, not a conviction. She is entitled to legal representation and the presumption of innocence as the case moves forward.

For now, two families are left confronting an irreversible loss and an uncertain future. The community awaits answers as investigators work to establish what happened inside the Buena Vista Township home.

May Alton Blackwell rest in peace. May everyone affected by this tragedy find support, strength, and healing as the investigation and legal proceedings continue.
