1 killed, multiple injured in South Laredo Shooting and Standoff, suspect in custody
UPDATE: 21-year-old Frida Castillo died.
LAREDO, TX – A violent standoff in the Cheyenne subdivision left multiple people critically wounded, including the alleged shooter, following an intense confrontation with law enforcement on Saturday afternoon.
The Laredo Police Department responded around 2 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 3900 block of Bannock Lane, located off Bob Bullock Loop behind the City Hall Annex.
Upon arrival, officers heard shots being fired from a residence and immediately came under fire.
Police quickly took cover, alerted command staff, and established a perimeter while awaiting additional support.
Due to the severity of the situation, LPD’s SWAT team, crisis negotiators, and additional tactical units were deployed to the scene.
However, authorities stated that the suspect, a 27-year-old man, was actively shooting at officers, leaving no opportunity for negotiation.
Inside the residence, law enforcement determined that multiple individuals had been wounded.
Given the ongoing threat and the critical nature of the situation, SWAT officers made the decision to enter the home and confront the suspect.
Among the victims transported to Laredo Medical Center are 21-year-old Frida Castillo and 24-year-old Jorge Castillo, both listed in critical condition.
The suspect was also critically wounded, along with at least two other individuals who sustained gunshot injuries.
A large-scale investigation is now underway as authorities work to determine the motive behind the shooting and gather further details on the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Our thoughts remain with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
A community prayer chain has been requested for those injured.
Authorities urge residents to avoid speculation and allow investigators to conduct a thorough inquiry.

Man Detained Outside Ken Paxton Watch Party in Dallas, Ammunition Recovered from Vehicle
DALLAS, Texas — March 3, 2026, 7:31 p.m. ET — A man was taken into custody Tuesday evening outside a Dallas hotel where Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was scheduled to host his election night watch party.
Officers with the Dallas Police Department detained the individual shortly before 6:00 p.m. Central time outside the Marriott Dallas Uptown.
It was not immediately clear whether the detention was directly related to the political event.
According to witnesses, the man had been driving a blue sedan parked near the hotel entrance. During a search of the vehicle, officers were seen removing what appeared to be ammunition compatible with multiple types of firearms.
Police also appeared to retrieve a license plate from inside the vehicle. Observers noted that the car did not display visible plates at the time.
The individual was reportedly wearing a camouflage face covering, sunglasses, a hat, and gloves while outside the hotel.
A member of Paxton’s campaign staff stated that the man had briefly entered the hotel and requested to use the restroom.
The staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, said the man claimed to be an Uber driver. However, the staffer expressed skepticism, citing the absence of license plates on the vehicle.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the individual was armed when he entered the hotel, nor have they publicly specified the reason for his detention.
Doors for the event were scheduled to open at 6:00 p.m., with campaign staff and members of the media already inside the venue.
Polls across most of Texas were set to close at 7:00 p.m., and Paxton is expected to address supporters later in the evening.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details have not yet been released.
