Los Angeles — Nick Reiner, the adult son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, has been arrested and is being held on $4 million bail in connection with the deaths of his parents, according to law enforcement and jail records.
The 32-year-old is currently in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department and was booked early Monday morning.
Authorities say Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found deceased Sunday afternoon inside their Brentwood residence on Chadbourne Avenue.
One of the couple’s daughters discovered the bodies and contacted police. Responding officers and paramedics pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate the couple suffered fatal injuries consistent with sharp-force trauma.
The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division has taken over the investigation. Officials have not publicly disclosed a motive and emphasized that the case remains active.
Investigators are continuing to collect evidence and conduct interviews.
Dispatch records show officers requested additional units at the home shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
While authorities have confirmed an arrest, they have not released detailed information regarding the circumstances leading up to the deaths or any alleged sequence of events inside the residence.
The news has prompted an outpouring of grief across the entertainment industry. Friends and longtime collaborators, including Billy Crystal and Larry David, were seen at the Reiner home Sunday evening.
Public tributes have also been shared by figures including former President Barack Obama, author Stephen King, and actor Ben Stiller, among many others.
Rob Reiner was a towering figure in American film and television. The son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, he began his career as a comedy writer before rising to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the landmark sitcom All in the Family, earning two Emmy Awards. He later became one of Hollywood’s most successful directors, with credits including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, A Few Good Men, The American President, and The Bucket List. He also continued acting in later years, with appearances on New Girl and The Bear. His most recent directorial project, according to industry listings, is a completed concert film tied to the fictional band Spinal Tap.
Michele Singer Reiner, whom Rob Reiner married in 1989, was a respected photographer and creative partner throughout their more than three decades together. The couple shared three children — Jake, Nick, and Romy — and Rob Reiner also had a daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage to director Penny Marshall.
Nick Reiner remains in custody as the investigation proceeds.
Authorities stress that all allegations are subject to the judicial process, and further details will be released as they are confirmed.
