Tanielu Soli Jr and his son Jarius Tanielu killed in crash on NC 87 in Cumberland County
Authorities in North Carolina are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision that claimed the lives of a man and a 12-year-old boy Monday morning in Cumberland County.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), the crash occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. along NC Highway 87 North near Swallowtail Court, just south of Fayetteville.
Preliminary findings indicate that a Ford Fusion traveling southbound veered off the roadway to the right, striking a guardrail.
The vehicle then crossed back to the left, clipping a median ditch before becoming airborne and overturning. As it reentered the roadway, the Ford Fusion collided head-on with a Subaru Outback traveling northbound.
Investigators reported that both occupants of the Ford Fusion were ejected during the crash and were pronounced deceased at the scene.
They were later identified as 41-year-old Tanielu Soli Jr., the driver, and 12-year-old Jarius Tanielu, the passenger. Both victims were residents of Fayetteville.
The driver of the Subaru Outback, who was the sole occupant of that vehicle, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities stated that, based on preliminary evidence, neither excessive speed nor alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.
The incident remains under active investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Train Derails in Ferguson Involving Vehicles, Hazmat Team Called Over Ethyl Alcohol Rail Car
FERGUSON, Mo. โ A train derailment involving vehicles prompted an emergency response in Ferguson on Ferguson Avenue, where authorities requested a hazardous materials team after determining that one of the train cars contained ethyl alcohol.
Emergency units were dispatched to 617 Ferguson Avenue after reports of the rail incident. Responders found a train that had derailed with vehicles involved.
Officials confirmed there was no reported entrapment. Crews were checking the scene for injuries and evaluating those involved in the incident.
A Hazmat response was requested because one rail car involved in the derailment was carrying ethyl alcohol. Emergency crews were assessing the rail car for any potential leak or hazardous condition and working to secure the area.
The presence of ethyl alcohol prompted additional safety precautions while responders examined the derailed train and surrounding vehicles.
At this time, authorities have not released details about possible injuries, the cause of the derailment or the extent of damage.
The investigation and emergency response remain ongoing in Ferguson, and officials are expected to provide additional information once the scene has been fully assessed.
