Judy Downs killed in two-vehicle crash in Coffee County
ELBA, Ala. — A fatal two-vehicle crash in Coffee County is under active investigation after a Friday afternoon collision claimed the life of a local woman and left another driver seriously injured.
According to the Coffee County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 4:17 p.m. on April 24 along Alabama Highway 189, just north of Elba.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a head-on collision involving two vehicles.
Authorities confirmed that Judy C. Downs was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:45 p.m. after suffering fatal injuries in the crash.
The driver of the second vehicle sustained significant injuries and was airlifted by Enterprise Rescue Air2 to a trauma center in Montgomery for emergency medical treatment.
Officials have not released the individual’s identity or current condition.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
The Coffee County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham extended condolences to the victim’s family, asking the community to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.

Train Derails in Ferguson Involving Vehicles, Hazmat Team Called Over Ethyl Alcohol Rail Car
FERGUSON, Mo. — A train derailment involving vehicles prompted an emergency response in Ferguson on Ferguson Avenue, where authorities requested a hazardous materials team after determining that one of the train cars contained ethyl alcohol.
Emergency units were dispatched to 617 Ferguson Avenue after reports of the rail incident. Responders found a train that had derailed with vehicles involved.
Officials confirmed there was no reported entrapment. Crews were checking the scene for injuries and evaluating those involved in the incident.
A Hazmat response was requested because one rail car involved in the derailment was carrying ethyl alcohol. Emergency crews were assessing the rail car for any potential leak or hazardous condition and working to secure the area.
The presence of ethyl alcohol prompted additional safety precautions while responders examined the derailed train and surrounding vehicles.
