Lesa McFarland and Her Children Fatally Shot by Husband Ryan Willis McFarland in Muscatine Murder-Suicide
MUSCATINE, Iowa — Authorities are investigating a tragic series of shootings that left six people dead, including the suspected gunman, in what police describe as a domestic-related murder-suicide spanning multiple locations across Muscatine on Monday, June 1, 2026.
According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers were first dispatched at approximately 12:12 p.m. to a reported shooting at a residence located at 210 Park Avenue.
Police officers and emergency medical personnel arrived at the residence and discovered four victims suffering from gunshot wounds inside the home. All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified the suspected shooter as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine.
Authorities said McFarland had fled the residence before law enforcement arrived. Officers immediately began searching for him and soon located him on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge.
When officers found McFarland, he was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police and emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As detectives continued investigating the initial shooting scene, information emerged suggesting there could be additional victims connected to the incident.
Officers subsequently responded to a residence in the 1500 block of Mill Street, where they discovered an adult male deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
Investigators then responded to a business located at 808 Grandview Avenue, where another adult male was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
The discovery of the additional victims brought the total number of deaths connected to the incident to six, including the suspected gunman.
Preliminary findings indicate the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute.
Authorities said all victims are believed to be family members of Ryan Willis McFarland.
One victim has been identified as Lesa McFarland, who was reportedly the wife of the suspect. Officials have not yet publicly released the identities of the remaining victims as family notifications continue.
The tragedy has had a profound impact on the Muscatine Community School District.
In a statement released to families and staff, district officials confirmed that two school district employees and two current students were among those killed during the incident.
School leaders described the event as an unimaginable loss for the entire community.
“It is with profound sadness that we share news of a tragic incident that occurred Monday afternoon in our community involving the McFarland family,” the district said in a statement. “Our hearts are broken for the family members, friends, colleagues, classmates, and all those affected by this unimaginable loss.”
To support students and staff, counseling services and crisis support resources were made available beginning Tuesday morning at Muscatine High School, Susan Clark Junior High School, Madison Elementary, McKinley Elementary, and Franklin Elementary.
The Muscatine Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the Muscatine Fire Department, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
Detectives continue processing multiple crime scenes, reviewing evidence, and conducting witness interviews to determine the full sequence of events that led to the deadly shootings.
Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

TAUNTON, Mass. — One person was killed and seven others were injured in an overnight shooting at a house party in Taunton, Massachusetts, authorities said.
The shooting happened at approximately 12:35 a.m. Sunday at a residence in the 261 Weir Street area. Taunton police officers responded after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots.
When officers arrived, they found several people suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigators were also informed that additional victims had already been transported to area hospitals for medical treatment.
Authorities ultimately identified eight shooting victims, all of whom were reportedly in their early 20s.
One of the victims, 22-year-old Zirovick Depina of Brockton, was pronounced dead early Sunday morning, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
Of the seven surviving victims, one remains in serious but stable condition, while the others suffered injuries that were considered non-life-threatening. Their identities have not been publicly released.
The shooting occurred during a gathering at the residence. Images from the scene showed a tent and tables in the yard, along with white balloons and what appeared to be a photo backdrop near a garage.
A neighbor told authorities that large gatherings and loud parties had reportedly been common at the residence.
The home is located about a mile from the Taunton Police Department headquarters. The neighbor expressed concern about the shooting occurring in the area, particularly given the late-night activity.
The investigation is being conducted by Taunton Police, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, and other investigative units. Detectives are working to determine what led to the gunfire and identify those responsible.
