Officer-Involved Shooting Reported During Third-Alarm Apartment Fire in Downtown San Diego
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A large emergency response unfolded Monday at a multi-story apartment building in downtown San Diego after a third-alarm fire was reported on the fourth floor of the structure, leading to an officer-involved shooting involving a barricaded suspect, according to preliminary incident information.
The incident occurred at approximately 1612 Sixth Avenue, Suite 410, where firefighters were initially dispatched for a working structure fire inside the apartment building.
Fire crews responding to the scene encountered an active fire on the fourth floor of the residential building. Due to the size and complexity of the incident, additional resources were requested and the response was upgraded to a third-alarm fire.
As firefighters worked to contain the blaze, law enforcement officers responded to reports involving a suspect believed to have started the fire and subsequently barricaded themselves inside an apartment unit.
According to preliminary reports, police officers discharged their weapons during an encounter with the barricaded suspect. Details regarding the circumstances that led to the officer-involved shooting have not yet been released, and authorities have not disclosed the condition of the suspect.
Officials reported that no police officers or firefighters were injured during the incident.
Emergency medical personnel evaluated at least one civilian for injuries. The extent of those injuries has not been publicly disclosed.
Authorities stated that both the law enforcement situation and the fire were brought under control following the coordinated response by police and fire personnel.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze and prevented further spread within the building. Automatic sprinkler systems activated during the incident, helping suppress the fire but also causing water damage in portions of the structure.
Following extinguishment efforts, crews transitioned into overhaul operations to identify and eliminate any remaining hot spots. Water salvage operations were also initiated to minimize additional property damage resulting from sprinkler activation and firefighting efforts.
Investigators are expected to examine both the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting. Additional details, including the identity of the suspect and the extent of any civilian injuries, have not yet been released.

19-year-old Brianna killed in Lincoln shooting, suspect Tyler Benzel charged with first-degree murder
LINCOLN, Neb. — Lincoln police have released additional information about a fatal shooting Tuesday evening that claimed the life of a 19-year-old woman identified as Brianna.
Authorities have identified 37-year-old Tyler Benzel as the suspect in the shooting. According to Lancaster County Jail records, Benzel has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death.
According to Lincoln police, the incident began with a verbal and physical altercation involving Benzel’s wife, Brianna and other individuals.
Investigators said they believe the confrontation was initiated by Benzel’s wife. Police said Benzel later left his residence and approached the group.
Authorities allege that Benzel told the individuals to leave and made verbal threats before raising a firearm and firing at the group. Police said the confrontation and shooting took place away from Benzel’s property.
Officers arrived at the scene within moments and found Brianna suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Officers immediately began providing life-saving medical treatment at the scene. Brianna was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Police recovered a 9mm handgun at the scene. However, investigators said forensic testing is still required to determine whether the recovered firearm was the weapon used in the shooting.
Authorities said they are not currently aware of any other weapons being involved in the incident.
Police said Benzel was cooperative when officers arrived at the scene. Authorities also said Benzel and his wife did not know Brianna or the other individuals involved before the altercation.
Benzel’s wife has not been arrested or charged in connection with the shooting at this time.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence, including forensic testing of the recovered firearm.
Authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Benzel is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
