MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Two people were killed and at least six others were injured, including two police officers, in a mass shooting Wednesday afternoon at a high-rise apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

Authorities identified the suspected shooter as Carlton Johnson II, 35, who also died following the shooting. Police have not immediately disclosed the circumstances of his death.

The shooting occurred at the Loring Towers apartment building at 15 East Grant Street shortly after 4:30 p.m., triggering a large law enforcement and emergency response.

Minneapolis police officers were dispatched to the area at approximately 4:36 p.m. after receiving an initial report that one person had been shot.

Additional emergency calls soon indicated that multiple shots had been fired. Officers arrived at the building at approximately 4:39 p.m. and entered the high-rise after discovering additional victims and hearing continued gunfire.

According to police, officers followed the sound of gunfire toward an upper floor of the building. Investigators reported that a haze inside the building significantly limited visibility as officers attempted to locate the source of the shooting.

Three Minneapolis police officers were injured while responding to the incident.

Two officers were struck by gunfire. One officer suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was reported to have a non-life-threatening injury. The second officer was undergoing surgery after sustaining a more serious injury.

A third officer was injured in a manner unrelated to gunfire and was being evaluated for an apparent non-life-threatening injury.

Minneapolis Police Sgt. Garrett Parten described the incident as a “tremendously tragic event” and expressed condolences to the victims, their families, injured officers and everyone affected by the shooting.

Police said one victim died at the scene, while another victim was transported to a hospital and later died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

At least six other people were injured, including the two officers who were struck by gunfire.

Authorities have not released the identities of the deceased victims or provided complete information about the conditions of all those injured.

Multiple reports have identified Carlton Johnson II, 35, as the suspected gunman. Police confirmed that the suspected shooter died following the incident but did not initially provide details about how he died.

Online reports have circulated about a possible domestic dispute, but authorities had not officially confirmed that the shooting was connected to a domestic incident.

Court records reportedly indicate that eviction proceedings were filed against Johnson and other occupants of his apartment at Loring Towers in late June.

Records also reportedly contain allegations that Johnson had made concerning statements involving firearms toward building security and others. He was allegedly seen displaying a firearm in his waistband on multiple occasions.

Johnson also reportedly had a history of prior arrests involving drug and domestic-related allegations.

These previous incidents are being reported as part of Johnson’s background and do not, by themselves, establish a motive for Wednesday’s shooting.

The shooting prompted a significant emergency response, with police units and ambulances arriving from across Minneapolis and surrounding agencies.

Police continued processing the scene and investigating what led to the violence. Authorities also worked to safely return residents of the high-rise to their homes following the incident.

The motive for the shooting had not been officially established, and investigators had not confirmed whether the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute or another dispute inside the building.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as authorities continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
