Authorities in Cheyenne say a 14-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder and will be prosecuted as an adult following the fatal shooting of his mother inside their home earlier this month.

According to investigators with the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on March 7 at approximately 12:50 p.m. after receiving a report of a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. When first responders arrived, they located 41-year-old Theresa McIntosh unconscious but still breathing, with a gunshot wound to the back of her head.

McIntosh was transported to a local hospital before being airlifted to a medical facility in Fort Collins for advanced treatment.

Despite medical efforts, she died from her injuries the following day, March 8, according to officials.

Authorities initially detained a juvenile at the scene. Investigators later identified the suspect as 14-year-old Havoc Leone, the victim’s son.

According to court documents cited by multiple local news outlets, Leone initially told deputies that his mother had taken her own life, but investigators say he later changed his account during questioning.

According to the investigative affidavit, Leone eventually admitted to shooting his mother while she was on the floor working on a puzzle in his bedroom, firing a single shot into the back of her head.

Investigators say tensions in the household had been building in the days leading up to the shooting.

Court records indicate that approximately one week before the incident, Leone had a dispute with his mother over receiving a poor grade in math. During that confrontation, authorities allege he removed a Taurus 9mm handgun from his mother’s vehicle and secretly hid the firearm in a boot inside his bedroom closet.

On the day of the shooting, McIntosh and her common-law husband—who is also Leone’s father—reportedly confronted the teenager after suspecting him of stealing an electronic tablet from one of McIntosh’s cleaning clients. During the argument, investigators say McIntosh demanded the password for the device, which was written in a notebook located in Leone’s bedroom.

According to investigators, Leone retrieved the notebook but also accessed the hidden handgun at the same time.

Leone reportedly told detectives that he threw the notebook toward his mother, who was bent down on the floor retrieving it. While she was turned away from him, he allegedly gripped the handgun with both hands and fired a single shot, striking her in the back of the head.

Leone’s father told investigators he had been in the basement playing video games while wearing noise-canceling headphones and initially believed the sound he heard was a balloon popping.

When he later went upstairs to check on the situation, he found McIntosh critically injured. Leone allegedly told him “I don’t know, it just went off,” referring to the firearm.

The father immediately called 911 and attempted to render aid to McIntosh while holding a towel against the head wound. Investigators say he noticed the handgun on the floor nearby, which he found unusual because the weapon was typically kept in the victim’s vehicle.

Medical staff who treated McIntosh reportedly told investigators that the gunshot wound did not appear consistent with a self-inflicted injury, raising further concerns that the shooting was not a suicide.

During interviews with investigators, Leone allegedly admitted he had previously thought about killing his mother during past arguments when she asked him to do things he did not want to do.

Leone has been formally charged with felony first-degree murder and is expected to be tried as an adult under Wyoming law. A judge has reportedly set bond at $500,000.

The case remains under investigation, and prosecutors have not yet announced when the next court proceedings will take place.
