Athens triple shooting victims identified
Authorities in Athens have arrested a suspect in connection with a triple shooting early Saturday morning that left two young men dead and another critically injured, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
Police say officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 400 block of North Jackson Street at approximately 2:20 a.m. on March 14. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
Two of the victims were later pronounced dead. Authorities identified them as 22-year-old Clayton Adams and 19-year-old Dylan Bentley. Bentley’s family later confirmed his death publicly, expressing their grief over the tragic loss.
A third victim, 20-year-old Landon Skinner, survived the shooting but sustained serious injuries, including a gunshot wound to the eye.
He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. According to family members, additional procedures may be required once his condition stabilizes.
Following an investigation, officers arrested 22-year-old Mark Desousa, a resident of Jefferson. He has been charged with malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery in connection with the shooting.
Shanna Roe, the mother of the surviving victim, said she has remained by her son’s side at the hospital as he continues to fight for recovery. She described the emotional toll the incident has taken on her family.
Roe said she is holding on to hope while coping with the shock and pain of seeing her son severely injured.
She also expressed sympathy for the families of the two young men who lost their lives, noting that she had been told they had attempted to help her son during the chaotic moments following the shooting.
In an additional heartbreaking revelation, Roe said she later learned that the suspect had been her son’s close friend for approximately six years, making the tragedy even more difficult for the family to process.
Police have not yet released details regarding what may have led to the shooting or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case remains under active investigation as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Authorities have not announced when the suspect is expected to appear in court.
