PORTERVILLE, Calif. — A Tulare County Sheriff’s Office deputy was killed during a violent confrontation Thursday morning after an eviction service escalated into an active shooting, authorities confirmed.

Sheriff Mike Boudreaux stated that deputies were serving an eviction notice at a residence near Brian Lane and Newcomb Street at approximately 10:20 a.m. when gunfire suddenly erupted.

The suspect, identified as David Morales (born 1966), allegedly opened fire on responding deputies, initiating a prolonged and dangerous standoff.

Officials reported that the suspect is believed to be barricaded inside the home and armed with a high-powered rifle.

Multiple rounds were exchanged between the suspect and law enforcement, effectively pinning down deputies at the scene during the initial stages of the incident.

During the exchange, one deputy was struck by gunfire. Fellow officers conducted a tactical rescue under active threat conditions and transported the injured deputy to Sierra View Medical Center.

Despite emergency medical efforts, the deputy later succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect remains at large and barricaded, and authorities have described the situation as extremely volatile.

Multiple SWAT teams and specialized units have been deployed to the area, working to secure the scene and systematically clear nearby homes to ensure the safety of residents.

As a precaution, several nearby schools—including Westfield Elementary School, Sequoia Middle School, and Monache High School—were placed on lockdown.

Students and staff are sheltering in place, and officials are urging parents not to come to the campuses until law enforcement indicates it is safe to do so.

Residents in the surrounding area have also been instructed to remain indoors and avoid the vicinity as the operation continues.

The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that the situation remains active and dangerous, with ongoing efforts to safely apprehend the suspect. Further updates are expected as the incident develops.
