Tulare County Deputy Killed in Porterville Shooting Identified as Randy Hoppert
PORTERVILLE, Calif. — The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and the surrounding community are mourning the loss of Deputy Randy Hoppert, who was killed in the line of duty Thursday morning during an active and ongoing incident in Porterville.
Deputy Hoppert was fatally shot while assisting with the service of an eviction notice at approximately 10:20 a.m. on April 9, 2026, in the area of Newcomb Street and Grand Avenue.
According to Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, deputies were met with gunfire from the suspect, identified as 60-year-old David Morales, upon arrival at the residence.
During the confrontation, Deputy Hoppert was struck by gunfire.
Fellow deputies conducted a tactical rescue under dangerous conditions and rushed him to Sierra View Medical Center.
Despite lifesaving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities report that Morales remains at large and is believed to be barricaded inside the residence, armed with a high-powered rifle.
The situation has been described as extremely volatile, with intermittent gunfire reported as law enforcement continues efforts to safely resolve the incident.
Multiple SWAT teams and specialized units remain on scene, working to secure the area and clear nearby homes.
Residents have been ordered to shelter in place, and several nearby schools—including Westfield Elementary School, Sequoia Middle School, and Monache High School—have been placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Officials are urging parents not to attempt to pick up students until the area is deemed safe.
Deputy Hoppert is remembered as a dedicated law enforcement officer, a devoted husband, and a loving father.
He is survived by his wife, Ashley, their two sons, Austin and Everett, as well as his mother and sister.
Sheriff Boudreaux has met with Deputy Hoppert’s family and extended his deepest condolences, as the department grieves the loss of one of its own.

14-Year-Old Middleton High School Student Carson Chrapkowski Dies After Bicycle Crash, Driver Alyssa Anderson Arrested
MIDDLETON, Idaho — A 14-year-old Middleton High School student has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle near the high school Friday night, according to the Middleton Police Department.
The teenager was transported by Life Flight to St. Luke’s Boise following the crash but died from his injuries early Saturday morning.
Middleton police said the crash involved a vehicle and a bicyclist near Middleton High School. The 14-year-old suffered critical injuries and was flown to a Boise hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Police announced Saturday morning that the young bicyclist had succumbed to his injuries.
The teen was identified in the information provided for this report as Carson Chrapkowski, a Middleton High School student. However, the police department’s public statement did not release the teenager’s name.
Police arrested 41-year-old Alyssa Louise Anderson in connection with the crash. Anderson was booked into the Canyon County Jail.
According to police, Anderson is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter, aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision or the specific allegations supporting the DUI charge.
