59-year-old Jeffery McDonald Killed in Motorcycle Crash After Fleeing Traffic Stop Near Lincoln Airport
LINCOLN, Neb. — Authorities in Lancaster County are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Saturday evening near the Interstate 80 interchange at NW 48th Street, following an attempted traffic stop by the Nebraska State Patrol.
According to officials, the incident began around 7:50 p.m. on May 2, 2026, when a Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) trooper observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed on westbound I-80 in Lincoln.
The trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop; however, the rider failed to yield and instead accelerated, leading to a brief pursuit.
Investigators say the motorcyclist drove recklessly during the incident, weaving through traffic, using the shoulder, and creating a dangerous situation for other motorists.
The pursuit lasted less than three minutes.
Authorities report that the rider exited the interstate at NW 48th Street, where he was unable to safely navigate the off-ramp.
The motorcycle subsequently crashed near the interchange.
The trooper arrived moments later, requested emergency medical assistance, and began life-saving measures at the scene.
The rider was identified as 59-year-old Jeffery McDonald of Lincoln.
Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
The Nebraska State Patrol has requested the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office to lead the crash investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that speed is a contributing factor, while authorities are also evaluating whether alcohol or drugs may have played a role.
Officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of the ongoing investigation.
