One Dead, Multiple Workers Possibly Trapped After Parking Garage Collapse in Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry Area
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A partial collapse at a parking garage under construction in the Grays Ferry neighborhood Wednesday afternoon has left one man dead and triggered a large-scale emergency response as officials work to account for potential additional victims.
According to police, the incident occurred just before 2:30 p.m. at a construction site located at the intersection of 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue, on the east side of the roadway across from the Grays Ferry Shopping Center.
The structure involved is a multilevel parking garage that was still under construction at the time of the collapse.
Emergency crews responded swiftly and located at least one individual trapped within the debris.
That victim was rescued and transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after 3:00 p.m., according to a police spokesperson.
Authorities have indicated that additional individuals may still be trapped within the collapsed portion of the structure; however, the exact number of potential victims remains unknown as search and rescue operations continue.
Preliminary information suggests that the collapse may have originated in a stairwell section that was under construction, though officials have not yet confirmed the cause.
Structural specialists and investigators are expected to conduct a detailed assessment once the site is stabilized.
The response has involved multiple agencies, including the Philadelphia Fire Department, as well as utility crews from Philadelphia Gas Works, the Philadelphia Water Department, and SEPTA, all of whom are assisting at the scene to address potential hazards and support rescue efforts.
Due to the severity of the incident, authorities have implemented extensive road closures in the surrounding area.
Grays Ferry Avenue has been shut down between 27th and 34th streets, leading to significant traffic disruptions throughout the vicinity.

Train Derails in Ferguson Involving Vehicles, Hazmat Team Called Over Ethyl Alcohol Rail Car
FERGUSON, Mo. — A train derailment involving vehicles prompted an emergency response in Ferguson on Ferguson Avenue, where authorities requested a hazardous materials team after determining that one of the train cars contained ethyl alcohol.
Emergency units were dispatched to 617 Ferguson Avenue after reports of the rail incident. Responders found a train that had derailed with vehicles involved.
Officials confirmed there was no reported entrapment. Crews were checking the scene for injuries and evaluating those involved in the incident.
A Hazmat response was requested because one rail car involved in the derailment was carrying ethyl alcohol. Emergency crews were assessing the rail car for any potential leak or hazardous condition and working to secure the area.
