Authorities in Adair County, Kentucky, are investigating a complex and violent series of incidents that culminated in an extended armed standoff Monday involving a barricaded suspect believed to be responsible for multiple homicides.

According to Adair County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Gary Roy, deputies were initially dispatched during the early morning hours to Chestnut Grove Road following a report of a possible shooting victim.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers came under gunfire from inside a residence. Deputies returned fire but were able to reposition and secure the perimeter without sustaining injuries.

The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Ryan Sneed of Columbia.

Investigators believe Sneed is responsible for the deaths of his mother, Joyce Sneed, and his aunt, Debra Clark, at a separate residence on Lakeview Drive.

Authorities indicated that both victims were found deceased, with evidence suggesting one victim suffered fatal throat injuries.

Earlier in the morning, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Sneed was reportedly seen outside his residence with an adult male later identified as Michael Adam.

Shortly thereafter, a 911 call was received alleging that Sneed forcibly dragged the individual into the home and shot him. Officials later indicated that the man is believed to be deceased.

When officers responded to the residence, Sneed allegedly opened fire from within the home, shooting through windows and effectively pinning down responding deputies.

Officers were eventually able to retreat to safer positions as the suspect moved to an upstairs area, giving him a tactical vantage point over the scene.

During the standoff, Sneed reportedly communicated with law enforcement and made statements indicating an intent to harm additional family members.

This prompted officers to locate and check on relatives, leading to the discovery of at least two confirmed homicide victims.

Authorities also began searching for other family members, including Sneed’s sister, who was later located and determined to be safe after initial difficulty in making contact.

Over the course of approximately eight hours, negotiators maintained intermittent communication with the suspect.

At one point, Sneed indicated a willingness to surrender but failed to follow through. He also claimed to have explosive devices inside the residence, raising significant safety concerns for responding personnel.

Law enforcement deployed multiple tactical resources during the standoff, including the use of drones, chemical agents, and a Special Response Team.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect fired repeatedly throughout the incident and at one point shot down a drone being used in the operation.

Officers also reported hearing multiple gunshots from inside the residence, along with at least one instance of a person screaming in pain, which investigators believe may have been related to a self-inflicted injury or additional violence inside the home.

At approximately 6:00 p.m., law enforcement engaged the suspect, and Sneed was ultimately taken down. While officials have not formally confirmed his condition, it is believed he may be deceased.

As of approximately 7:00 p.m., authorities were continuing to clear the residence to ensure it was safe for investigators to enter and process the scene.

Officials noted that there are multiple active crime scenes connected to this case across the area.

The Kentucky State Police has assumed primary responsibility for the investigation, which remains active and ongoing.

Sheriff Roy confirmed that no law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident. However, due to the severity and complexity of the case, authorities are continuing to gather evidence and piece together the sequence of events.

Additionally, officials from the Adair County Constable Office announced that Chestnut Grove Road has been closed to through traffic, and motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes as the investigation continues.

Authorities have not yet released full details regarding all victims or potential motives.

The suspect is reported to have had an extensive prior criminal history, with more than 40 previous arrests.

Law enforcement officials expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and emphasized that further information will be released as it becomes available.
