CHICAGO, Illinois — Authorities have identified the Chicago police officer killed in a shooting at a North Side hospital as 38-year-old John Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department.
The incident, which also left a second officer critically injured, has raised serious concerns about in-custody security protocols at medical facilities.
The shooting occurred Saturday morning at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, located in the 5100 block of North California Avenue in the Ravenswood/Lincoln Square area.
According to officials, officers had transported a suspect—identified as Alphanso Talley—to the hospital’s emergency department for treatment following an earlier arrest in connection with a robbery.
Despite being in police custody, the suspect allegedly gained access to a firearm while inside the facility and opened fire on the officers.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Officer John Bartholomew died from a gunshot wound to the head. His death has been officially ruled a homicide.
Bartholomew served in the department’s 17th District and had been with CPD for a decade. Colleagues and officials described him as a dedicated officer committed to public service.
A second officer, a 57-year-old veteran with more than 20 years of service, was also shot during the incident and remains in critical condition at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Authorities have not yet publicly released his identity.
Police confirmed that Alphanso Talley has been taken into custody following the shooting. A weapon was recovered at the scene.
Investigators are working to determine how the suspect was able to access a firearm despite being under supervision.
In a statement, Endeavor Health said the suspect was screened for weapons upon arrival and remained under law enforcement escort, in accordance with hospital safety procedures. However, officials acknowledged that the suspect was still able to obtain a weapon and carry out the attack.
Hospital authorities emphasized that no patients or staff members were injured during the incident and confirmed they are fully cooperating with law enforcement.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling stated that the investigation remains active as authorities examine security protocols, the suspect’s actions, and the sequence of events that led to the shooting.
The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny over in-custody handling procedures in medical settings, particularly when suspects are transported outside secure detention facilities.

14-Year-Old Middleton High School Student Carson Chrapkowski Dies After Bicycle Crash, Driver Alyssa Anderson Arrested
MIDDLETON, Idaho — A 14-year-old Middleton High School student has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle near the high school Friday night, according to the Middleton Police Department.
The teenager was transported by Life Flight to St. Luke’s Boise following the crash but died from his injuries early Saturday morning.
Middleton police said the crash involved a vehicle and a bicyclist near Middleton High School. The 14-year-old suffered critical injuries and was flown to a Boise hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Police announced Saturday morning that the young bicyclist had succumbed to his injuries.
The teen was identified in the information provided for this report as Carson Chrapkowski, a Middleton High School student. However, the police department’s public statement did not release the teenager’s name.
Police arrested 41-year-old Alyssa Louise Anderson in connection with the crash. Anderson was booked into the Canyon County Jail.
According to police, Anderson is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter, aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision or the specific allegations supporting the DUI charge.
The crash remains under investigation by the Middleton Police Department and Idaho State Police. Investigators have not released further information about the sequence of events or whether additional charges could be filed.
