Shorewood Resident and Soccer Star Jose Perez Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-55 in Joliet
JOLIET, Illinois — A 21-year-old Shorewood resident and local soccer player was killed in a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 55, according to authorities.
The victim has been identified as Jose A. Perez, known as “JP,” by the Will County Coroner’s Office.
Perez was pronounced dead at 9:10 a.m. on April 26, 2026, following the crash in the southbound lanes of I-55 in Troy Township.
According to the Illinois State Police, troopers from Troop 3 responded to reports of a three-vehicle collision near Black Road at approximately milepost 254.
Authorities confirmed that:
- One occupant was pronounced dead at the scene
- Another individual was transported to a local hospital with injuries
The circumstances leading up to the crash have not yet been fully determined.
The incident caused a temporary shutdown of all southbound lanes of Interstate 55, leading to significant traffic disruptions in the area. Motorists were diverted off the highway at U.S. Route 30 while emergency crews worked at the scene.
All lanes were reopened by approximately 11:20 a.m., officials said.
The Illinois State Police continue to investigate the crash, including factors such as speed, road conditions, and vehicle involvement.

Train Derails in Ferguson Involving Vehicles, Hazmat Team Called Over Ethyl Alcohol Rail Car
FERGUSON, Mo. — A train derailment involving vehicles prompted an emergency response in Ferguson on Ferguson Avenue, where authorities requested a hazardous materials team after determining that one of the train cars contained ethyl alcohol.
Emergency units were dispatched to 617 Ferguson Avenue after reports of the rail incident. Responders found a train that had derailed with vehicles involved.
Officials confirmed there was no reported entrapment. Crews were checking the scene for injuries and evaluating those involved in the incident.
A Hazmat response was requested because one rail car involved in the derailment was carrying ethyl alcohol. Emergency crews were assessing the rail car for any potential leak or hazardous condition and working to secure the area.
