Former River Valley Student Brenden Frye Killed in Cherokee County Rollover Crash
Brenden Frye, a 15-year-old former student of the River Valley Community School District who had recently enrolled in the Cherokee Community School District, was killed in a tragic rollover crash early Saturday morning in rural Cherokee County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The deadly single-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 2:33 a.m. on May 9 along Highway C66, just west of J Avenue in northwest Iowa.
Investigators said a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2 carrying four teenage boys was traveling westbound when the 16-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle for reasons that remain under investigation.
According to the Iowa State Patrol crash report, the Pontiac entered the north ditch, rolled over, struck a utility pole, and eventually caught fire after coming to rest.
Authorities said Frye was seated in the rear seat of the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another 16-year-old rear-seat passenger, who also reportedly was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover. He sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Sanford Medical Center for emergency treatment.
The 16-year-old driver from Cherokee and a 14-year-old front-seat passenger from Washta were both wearing seat belts and sustained minor injuries. Officials said both were transported by Cherokee EMS to a local hospital and later released.
Investigators noted that it remains unclear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The crash remains under active investigation, and authorities have not announced whether charges are expected.
The devastating accident has left both the River Valley and Cherokee school communities mourning the loss of Frye, who had recently transferred schools.
In a letter shared with families and community members, school officials expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and encouraged residents to keep everyone affected in their thoughts and prayers.
Administrators confirmed that classes will continue as scheduled Monday, but both districts acknowledged the emotional impact the tragedy is expected to have on students, teachers, and staff.
To support grieving students and employees, specialized counseling services will be available throughout the day near school offices. District leaders urged anyone struggling emotionally following the accident to seek assistance from school counselors and support staff.
Officials with the River Valley Community School District stated that counseling resources would be available for both middle and high school students, as well as elementary students, as the communities begin coping with the sudden loss of one of their own.
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of condolences across northwest Iowa as classmates, teachers, friends, and family members remember Frye and support the injured teens recovering from the crash.

29-Year-Old Alex Rodriguez Found Dead on University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, No Foul Play Suspected
URBANA, Ill. — A 29-year-old Champaign man found dead on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus Monday morning has been identified as Alex C. Rodriguez, according to the Champaign County Coroner’s Office.
The University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) responded to the area of Green and Wright streets at approximately 6:42 a.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive person near the Alma Mater statue.
Officers arrived and found Rodriguez on a concrete bench. Emergency medical assistance was requested at the scene.
The Champaign County Coroner’s Office responded, and Rodriguez was pronounced dead at approximately 7:16 a.m., according to Coroner Laurie Brauer.
Authorities said Rodriguez was not affiliated with the University of Illinois.
UIPD provided an update Monday afternoon, saying preliminary observations at the scene revealed no signs of foul play.
Police also said there was no evidence of an ongoing threat to the university campus or surrounding community based on the information available when officers responded.
Because investigators did not identify an active threat, the university did not issue an Illini-Alert emergency notification.
The circumstances surrounding Rodriguez’s death have not been determined.
An autopsy has been scheduled, and the death remains under investigation by the University of Illinois Police Department.
Authorities have not released additional information about the circumstances leading to Rodriguez’s death.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected as investigators receive further information from the autopsy and other evidence.
