19-month-old child killed in single-vehicle crash on I-96 near Alden Nash in Lowell Township
LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities are investigating a tragic single-vehicle crash on Interstate 96 that resulted in the death of a 19-month-old child and left a Lansing woman injured Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Michigan State Police Grand Rapids Post, troopers responded on April 28, 2026, to a personal injury crash on westbound I-96 near Alden Nash Road in Kent County.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by a 41-year-old woman from Lansing, was traveling at a high rate of speed and exhibiting erratic driving behavior prior to the crash.
Investigators report that the vehicle veered from the median side of the roadway to the shoulder before leaving the roadway entirely and striking a cluster of trees.
When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found a 19-month-old female passenger suffering from critical injuries.
First responders immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR, before transporting the child to a nearby hospital.
Despite their efforts, the child was later pronounced dead.
The driver was also transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and is expected to recover.
Authorities say alcohol and/or drugs are suspected to have been contributing factors in the crash.
Toxicology results are pending, and charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The westbound lanes of I-96 were closed for approximately 90 minutes while troopers conducted an on-scene investigation and crash reconstruction.
Officials have not released the identities of those involved.
The case remains under active investigation, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.

Train Derails in Ferguson Involving Vehicles, Hazmat Team Called Over Ethyl Alcohol Rail Car
FERGUSON, Mo. — A train derailment involving vehicles prompted an emergency response in Ferguson on Ferguson Avenue, where authorities requested a hazardous materials team after determining that one of the train cars contained ethyl alcohol.
Emergency units were dispatched to 617 Ferguson Avenue after reports of the rail incident. Responders found a train that had derailed with vehicles involved.
Officials confirmed there was no reported entrapment. Crews were checking the scene for injuries and evaluating those involved in the incident.
A Hazmat response was requested because one rail car involved in the derailment was carrying ethyl alcohol. Emergency crews were assessing the rail car for any potential leak or hazardous condition and working to secure the area.
The presence of ethyl alcohol prompted additional safety precautions while responders examined the derailed train and surrounding vehicles.
At this time, authorities have not released details about possible injuries, the cause of the derailment or the extent of damage.
The investigation and emergency response remain ongoing in Ferguson, and officials are expected to provide additional information once the scene has been fully assessed.
